The City Driver is responsible for daily yard operations, local load deliveries, trailer positioning, and maintaining accurate equipment and load documentation. This role ensures efficient movement of freight between the company yard and customer locations while maintaining safety, communication, and organization throughout daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Yard Checks:
- Complete a full yard check each morning using the company-provided city form.
- Record:
- Tractor number
- Trailer number currently hooked to the tractor
- Loaded trailer numbers assigned for delivery
- Customer names
- Trip numbers
- Identify and document:
- Any red-tagged trailers and reasons for tagging
- Any empty trailer numbers located in the yard
Load Delivery and Trailer Management:
- Deliver loads from the city yard to customer locations safely and on time.
- Position and relocate trailers within the yard and at customer facilities as needed.
- Ensure trailers are properly staged for pickup, loading, or unloading.
- Maintain communication with dispatch and operations regarding trailer movement and delivery status.
Safety and Compliance
- Perform all duties in compliance with DOT regulations and company safety policies.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Report equipment issues, damages, or safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain accurate logs and required transportation paperwork.
Qualifications:
- Valid CDL Class A license
- Clean driving record preferred
- Ability to maneuver trailers safely in tight yard environments
- Strong attention to detail and organization
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage daily responsibilities efficiently
